A still popular CrossFit diet is Dr Barry Sears Zone diet. Highly respected by the CrossFit community. It recommends eating food in a strict ratio. You should source 40% of your calories from carbohydrates. 30% from protein and the other 30% from fat. The Zone in the name of the diet refers to the ideal balance of the hormones glucagon and insulin that happens when the regime is followed correctly. Enthusiasts of this diet believe that when the diet is adhered to properly the body releases “eicosanoids”. These are molecules that are anti inflammatory and exhibit a similar effect to drugs like aspirin and these in turn counter something called “cellular inflammation”.

This cellular inflammation has allegedly many undesirable effects on the body. It can cause chronic illness, increases the chances of injury, and impacts negatively on athletic performance, as well as causing obesity. According to Dr Sears there are no drugs that can effectively treat this condition and the only way to manage it is through diet.

To follow the diet you must divide all your meals into three equal portions. One third of the plate should contain some protein the size of your palm. The other two thirds of the meal should be quality carbohydrates (fruit and vegetables). Finally you need to add a small amount of fat that is High in omega 3 and low in omega 6 and saturated fats, olive oil for example.

A block system has been devised to assist people make the food choices, A block is one choice from a list of protein, carbohydrates and fat. So a typical day could be comprised of the following:

Meal 1: Three blocks
Snack: Two blocks
Meal 2: Three blocks
Snack: Two blocks
Meal 3: Three blocks

This amounts to 13 blocks, sufficient for most adult men. 11 blocks should be enough for most women. The goal is to consume calories regularly through the day which regulates the hormonal response to food.

So how do you define a block? A single block of protein is equal to 7 grams of protein. Two blocks 14 grams and three blocks 21 grams. A block of carbs is equivalent to 9 grams, two blocks are 18 grams and three blocks are 27 grams. Finally a block of fat is 1.5 grams, two blocks are 3 grams and three blocks are 4.5 grams. A typical day in a Zone diet could look like this:

Breakfast: Three blocks: 3 egg whites, 3 turkey bacon rashers, 3 pieces of broccoli, teaspoon of butter
Snack: Two blocks: 2 oz Chicken breast, 1 pear, 12 peanuts
Lunch: Three blocks: 3 oz can of tuna, 3 tsb lite mayo, 1 slice of bread, ½ apple
Snack: 2 oz ground meat grilled, ½ bun, pickle, 2 tsb avocado oil.
Dinner: Three blocks: 3 oz roasted turkey, 2 ½ cups of kale, 1 tsp olive oil, 1 peach.

The diet is ideal for people wanting to lose weight and the goal is to consume quality calories in a ratio of 40:30:30.

This diet can be hard to follow. To consume food in the correct ratio great care has to be taken. There is also concern in some quarters about the amount of protein and fat that is consumed

But the zone diet plan is still a credible approach to nutrition in the CrossFit community and can still be called a CrossFit diet.

I sometimes hear from people who are confused as to which Medifast plan to choose. I get a good deal of questions from people trying to determine the differences between the 4 + 1 or the 5 +1. I often hear comments like “I am trying to decide between the Medifast 4 +1 or the 5+1. What’s the real difference? Which are most people on? I like the idea of having two larger meals, but I’m not sure if the calories are low enough for me to lose decent amounts of weight on that plan.” I’ll try to offer some clarification in the following article.

The 5 +1 Is The Most Popular Medifast Plan: With the 5 +1, you are eating five prepackaged meals per day plus one main “lean and green meal.” You have the option of making this yourself or going with a carefully chosen frozen meal from the grocery store. (You can even use a restaurant meal if you’re careful.) Many like the idea of eating something fresh each day.

I have to admit that this is by far the most popular package. I think that there are a couple of reasons for this. First, many people like the idea of only having one meal to cover or prepare on their own. Secondly, this option takes in around 1200 calories per day which can offer both quick and dramatic results. So many consider this to be both an effective and convenient plan. With that said, some do end up choosing the 4 +1, especially in their later phase of the diet.

Many People Use The 4 + 2 To Transition Off Of Medifast: For the most part, I find that the people on this plan are transitioning off the diet. Usually, they have met their weight loss goals and they have worked their way back up to 2 lean and green meals. So, they’re only using 4 of the prepackaged diet meals. The idea is that eventually, they will work their way back up to regular and sensible eating. Eventually, they make have a Medifast snack or two that they’ve come to like, but this is more out of habit than necessity. I’ve found that people who don’t enjoy cooking would prefer to be responsible for only one meal on their own. However, there are folks that truly don’t mind preparing their own food, especially those who have been on the diet for a while.

So, Which Is It?: If you’re just starting the diet and not transitioning, keep in mind that you will take in more calories on the 4 + 2 because you’re eating two larger meals rather than only one. Since most people try to keep their lean and green at about 500 calories, you’re looking at around 1600 – 1700 calories per day on this plan. However, when you consider that many people take in anywhere from 2000 – 3000 calories each day, you’re probably still taking in far fewer calories than normal no matter which option you chose.

I hope that I’ve shown you the difference between these two plans. Both can help you lose weight and, if you really enjoy cooking your own meals and worry about being hungry, the 4 + 2 plan can be a nice way to cut your calories while not making very drastic changes. Keep in mind though that as far as support goes, most people just go with the popular 5 + 1 until they transition off the plan. But I think that both plans are more than workable, depending on your goals. Some people don’t have a lot of weight to lose and 1600 calories per day are still going to be very effective for them. On the flip side, some want to have weight loss as soon as possible and they’d prefer to be more aggressive with one less lean and green meal.

If you are interested in dieting, you may have heard talk of how to diet. I can almost guarantee you haven’t heard everything though. In fact, if you read the rest of this how to diet review, you’ll discover three features almost nobody is talking about…yet…

Antioxidants

When it comes to preventing problems like heart disease and type 2 diabetes, nothing works as well as eating foods rich in antioxidants. Some antioxidants target and prevent different kinds of cancers from growing. Asparagus has several different kinds of antioxidants that work especially well together. Compared to other vegetables, the potency of antioxidant activity in asparagus has been impressive. Such vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage have fewer antioxidants while those like spinach have more. Asparagus is unique in the fact that few vegetables have large quantities of the antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione contains sulfur, which helps to get all the bad things in your body to stick to it. This antioxidant is created by the body, but in limited amounts.

Rutin

Rutin is not a vitamin, but sometimes it is called vitamin P. This compound, found in quantities inside this vegetable, helps to make the capillary walls stronger. Specifically, this material improves circulation by making the blood thinner. Rutin has been studied in animals, but no real human test results have been made available. Some test results do show anti-inflammatory traits in the animal results. Also there is a case to be made that Rutin can treat hemorrhoids. This compound is also an antioxidant; tests have shown that it is stronger than most other antioxidants researched. Hemophilia can be reduced because the capillaries have been strengthened.

Vitamin K

The purpose of vitamin K is to help with building bones, blood clotting and protecting the heart. Those taking Coumadin would be advised not to take too much vitamin K as it would lead to too much blood thickening. Vitamin K is a blood clotter, but it is not the case that you have to take over the counter vitamins to get enough vitamin K. One cup of asparagus contains roughly one hundred and fifty micrograms of this vitamin. Per serving asparagus has three times more vitamin K than avocados and so much more than strawberries which only has trace amounts. On the other hand, spinach has two and a half times more vitamin K and the leafy green kale has almost ten times more vitamin K.

If you are interested in dieting, you may have heard talk of how to diet. I can almost guarantee you haven’t heard everything though. In fact, if you read the rest of this how to diet review, you’ll discover three features almost nobody is talking about… yet…

Fiber

Fiber works by shortening the amount of time cancerous toxins stay in the colon, thereby reducing the chance of colon cancer. One cup of brown rice supplies fourteen percent of your daily need of fiber. Selenium also works at reducing the risk of getting colon cancer. One cup of brown rice provides more than twenty five percent of daily intake of selenium. This mineral most average Americans do not get in their diets. This mineral repairs DNA and helps to regularize the division of cells. It also encourages apoptosis, this is where a cell destroys itself if it used up or abnormal. Testing indicated that the there is a very strong correlation between the level of selenium in a diet and the odds of getting cancer. Selenium also helps to reactivate certain proteins which, when inactivated, allow toxins to damage DNA.

Comparison with White Rice

In terms of carbohydrates and calories, there is not much difference between white rice and brown rice. The real difference is the nutrient content and the level of industrial processing. Brown rice is created when the husk of the rice grain is removed. White rice is produced when not only the husk is removed, but also the bran and the germ. Many vitamins and minerals are removed via this act of industrialization. However some B vitamins are recovered due to FDA requirements. One cup of brown rice contains eighty four milligrams of magnesium while white rice contains only nineteen milligrams. Oils, fatty acids and fiber are also removed from white rice.

The B Vitamins

Vitamin B1, thiamine, is responsible for converting common carbohydrates into glucose. Although lack of this vitamin is rare, it can be found in alcoholics, and whatever the negative effects produced can be cured with more of the vitamin. Vitamin B2, riboflavin, helps to break apart proteins, fats and, like thiamine, carbohydrates. Deficits of this vitamin can result in skin and soft tissue damage. Vitamin B3, niacin, is required for processing food, helping the digestive system, preserving the nerves and keeping your skin healthy. Lack of niacin, in the times before, had been associated with the impoverished and led to mental illness.

In recent years, the methods around dieting have become much more loudly announced, and much more challenging to believe. We have media sources telling us to drink 8 cups of coffee one day and then telling us to stop drinking coffee all together the next. We have to constantly investigate what is going on, and which trends are safe. When it comes to dieting, there has been an influx in diets that revolve around more revolutionary tactics, which make them both appealing, but risky seeming. That is why we would like to bring up the hCG diet, and discuss what makes it so unique for an individual.

Now, just to make sure we are all on the same page, let’s quickly define what hCG is. It stands for human chorionic gonadotrophin, and it is a hormone that is only found in pregnant women. Are you getting to see where it is unique yet?

The hCG diet then, revolves around extracting this hormone from pregnant women, or working to recreate its effects, and finding a way to inject it into a person who is not pregnant. Now, there’s no cause for a concern over what we have just said. There is no way, of course, that one could become pregnant from trying such a diet. We just want to clear up such a thought before it crosses your mind.

Now, the first part of following the diet deals with your actual food regimen. Everyone knows how easy it is to fall of the wagon of healthy eating, whether by just having a rough day or going out to eat with friends, it can sometimes just be impossible. Well, get ready to hear about the difficulty of the diet path that the hCG diet involves. After you do, you may be wondering if you can even ignore the simple action of just putting food in your mouth.

You see, in order for the hCG diet to really be its most effective, one must be prepared to stick to a caloric diet of around five hundred calories per day. Now, if you are someone who really loves their sweets, they are going to have to make a pretty big sacrifice. After all, five hundred calories can be no more than a muffin a day, and surely that’s not enough food to imagine eating. Luckily, there are fruits and vegetables that are remarkably low in calories. In fact, one could produce two hearty salads a day on five hundred calories if they limit and keep track of the kind of dressing they are using.

Granted, the hCG diet is not about only eating a low amount of calories, after all, that would just be fasting.

The other half of your diet fits around getting daily injections of the hCG hormone. This hormone works to offset the nutrients you are leaving out of your caloric diet and works to keep you feeling filled up and satisfied.

It may sound unbelievable, but if you are in any way interested in hCG diet after learning the basics, get in touch with your local physician today to learn more!

I sometimes hear from people who are trying to determine which meals to order from Nutrisystem. And they are trying to figure out which foods they might like or enjoy the most. One of the most common inquiries or concerns focus on the dinner meals. This makes sense as these meals are a little more substantial and contain slightly bigger portions. In the following article, I’m going to tell you what I think are the best tasting dinners. Keep in mind that this in only my opinion but interestingly enough, most of my picks are ranked highly by other users.

Southwest-Style Chicken Wrap: This is an item from the basic menu. It is spicy and substantial and it includes chicken, beans, rice, corn, and peppers in a tortilla. To me, it taste a lot like a fajita. You can make this in the microwave. This meal is rated nearly five stars by other users.

Turkey Pepperoni Pizza: This item comes from the select or frozen gourmet line. The topping is really truly meant to taste like pepperoni and it is pretty close. There is a generous amount of cheese. You probably won’t mistake this for delivery pizza because of its size, but it’s very tasty. It’s pretty filling also. It too is rated almost five stars. You can microwave it or bake it an oven. This is my favorite pizza on the menu, but if you’re not going for the select foods, many of the pizzas on the basic line are quite good as well.

Chili With Beans: This comes off of the basic menu and it does contain beef (although there is a vegetarian version as well,) and it’s very substantial. I like this because it is tasty and versatile. I’ve been known to use this on top of the turkey dog at lunch. And I also sometimes wrap it in a tortilla with a little cheese. It’s rated over 4 1/2 starts out of a scale from 1 to 5.

Flame Broiled Beef Patty (Hamburger) I’m not sure why this is referred to as the “flame broiled beef patty” when in fact it is a hamburger and that is exactly what it tastes like. This meal doesn’t include the bread or roll, but you are allowed to have one. As the name implies, this patty is pre broiled. You basically just reheat it and then add your toppings. It is rated 4 out of 4 stars.

Mushroom Risotto: This item is also off the basic menu. According to the ingredients list, it contains Italian sausage in addition to mushrooms, but it doesn’t taste overly meaty to me. What I notice is that it’s very creamy and it’s not at all dry and crumbly like pre made risotto can sometimes be. It is rated about 4 stars.

Ravioli Formaggio: This is a frozen entrée that is also on the select line. I didn’t really choose this because it tastes all that much different from regular ravioli. I just choose it because not many diets allow you to have cheese filled pasta so really, what’s not to like? It’s rated about 4 stars.

Cajun Chicken And Sausage With Rice: I like this entrée for the same reasons that I like the southwest chicken wrap. There are very distinct and strong flavors that you normally don’t find on a diet. And unlike the wrap, this entrée is available on the basic menu. One taste and you detect a lot of Cajun seasonings. It’s a bit spicy, but that is what I like about it. And it’s rated over 4 stars.

I hope I’ve shown you that there’s a wide variety of foods that I find tasty on both the basic and select lines. Your opinions may differ from mine, but luckily, there are a lot of dinner items from which to choose.

In fact, if you read the rest of this how to diet review, you’ll discover three features almost nobody is talking about… yet…

Mind Help

Old people with an average age of seventy five ate blueberries for twelve weeks and managed to perform better with two tests on memory. Eating two and a half cups of blueberries a day, it is believed that blueberries help with age related mind issues. It is suggested from the research that the nerve cells become protected. Blueberries have so many antioxidants that oxidation has trouble starting. It turns out that the nerve cells have a nature made weakness of oxidation so antioxidant food is always a necessity. The cells work by using oxygen to send message across the body, but the oxygen can overflow without antioxidants to correct them.

Disease Prevention

Several compounds in blueberries prevent the formation of cancer cells and inflammation. The skin of the blueberry contains a large amount of the youth compound, resveratrol. Hepatitis C can be slowed down in the body by proanthocyanidin, a compound found in the leaves of blueberry plants. A dietary supplement containing the nutrient has been effective in doing just that. Animal tests have resulted in a lower likelihood for getting strokes. Other tests have shown that urinary tract infections may be reduced by blueberries. In other animal tests anthocyanins have been proven to make the blood vessels more flexible. An increase in the level of nitric oxide in the body results in a more normal blood pressure reading.

Blueberry Picking

Do not pick a berry that has any red in it, it means it’s not ripe. Do try to pick berries that have a bit of a light gray blue color. Red, purple and blue tinted berries ripen after then have been picked and left in room temperature for a time. Those berries that have either a green or white color will not ripen after picked. Blueberries hold onto a bush like grapes, so you would want to pick them the same way. Hold onto a bucket with one hand and brush your hand against the targeted blueberries with the other, they should easily fall in. Those that stay on the branch were most likely unripe anyway. The normal person gets one gallon of berries an hour while those with experience get two.

Weight loss is something that many people shove aside. Many excuses have been made to avoid it as well. The young and old alike try to avoid it all the time because they are overwhelmed by the amount of energy they are required to exert. This is also the reason why many people choose to go on diets as well. Sadly, many fail to do it the right way and end up under eating and starving themselves. Diets have always been one of the most popular weight loss methods known to man and the most common of all the common is the Cabbage Soup Diet.

This diet regimen requires you to eat only a small amount of vegetables and broth, which is why it is only advised for 7 days. Its goal is to help you get rid of all unnecessary and harmful toxins in your body by means of its high fiber content. However, you must still eat other fruits and veggies with it because technically, all you are consuming is liquid and a few vegetables. In addition, eating more fruits and vegetables will boost the fiber intake and even hasten your weight loss.

There are several reasons why the soup diet is a program that is worth a shot. With a promise that it will help you lose weight in a matter of seven days, you will be able to fit into all of your old clothes in your closet. Another reason why losing weight with the soup diet is ideal is because it greatly promotes longevity and being healthy.

Physical activities will be fairly easier to accomplish. You’ll be able to climb stairs without becoming breathless you’ll be able to exercise longer and get more things done. Being fit and healthy doesn’t only affect us physically. We also feel good about ourselves because we know we feel relaxed and gain more confidence. Always remember, what we feel inside reflects on the outside. Just imagine how young you would start to look if you feel completely rejuvenated inside!

You would have to agree with me if I said that weight loss now sounds more interesting with the knowledge of the things we can do by faithfully following it! Keep in mind that we only achieve what we desire if we work hard for it. Have a go at the soup diet recipe and see what kind of results you get!

With so much weight loss, fitness, and diet programs available today–it is not surprising to find that some of these programs are created by celebrities. Not only are celebrities on every kind of diet imaginable, some of them seem to think they know what it takes to be an exert in the field of losing weight. A lot of us follow the lives of celebrities very closely and because of this, we become victim to their latest ploy to get us to spend our hard earn money.

Because of their loyal fans, celebrities put their names on fitness products that they claim to have helped them reach their weight loss and fitness goals. Many of these fitness products come in the form of books and DVDs which are pushed at us in the form of infomercials. Some celebrities have even come out with their very own body building supplements that they say you can use along with their miracle diet program. Suzanne Somers, Dr. Phil, Sylvester and Marilu Henner are just a few of the many celebrities who have their own diet programs.

Some diet programs are not worth your hard earn money, but the celebrities creating and advertising them are not concern with that too much. They are only interested in getting your credit card out of your wallet. They know that there are millions of over weight individuals who are in desperate need of losing weight and they are willing to try just about anything–which will help them lose those extra pounds and get in shape. Do you know why diet programs and weight loss supplements by the celebrities sell? It is simply due to the popularity of the celebrity.

Many of us see these men and women with these phenomenal bodies and immediately we start wishing we had the same look with our bodies. Some of us get so caught up on what we see on celebrities, that we do what ever we can to get the latest diet program or fitness product that they come out with. The question that many of us need to ask ourselves is this, “what happens when we find out that the product does not meet our expectations or if it was a lie all along?”

Understand this, not because a person has reached “celebrity” status in their life, means that they necessarily know what they are talking about–especially when it comes to diet and nutrition. You would think that the best advice you could buy would be from someone who is an expert and a professional in the diet and health field such as a registered dietician, or a medical doctor. You can even seek advice from experts such as someone who has studied the human body and its nutritional needs.

Just like any subject in life–it is important that before you buy any fitness, diet program, or weight loss supplement that has been created or endorsed by celebrities, you examine the credentials of the individual/s selling the product. Read the author’s biography if it is a book to see if the individual has any actual clinical experience or if they are an expert in what they are selling. Most of the celebrity diet plans available on the market today, are of the “quick fix” variety. Reason being that many individuals wanting to lose weight, want to do it quickly.

Consumers like you and me can easily be sucked into purchasing celebrity diet programs and books. This is simply because of the “name recognition” factor that they is called “branding” in the merchandising circles. You buy a product simply because you recognize the face or name of the person who is selling or who made the product. You are essentially making the purchase based solely on the image of the familiar person and not on the merits of the product. This type of buying will put money in the pockets of the celebrity but may leave you with a product that is less than you were looking for and may even harm you if the nutrition advice is not healthy for you.

When you see these men and women with their awesome looking bodies advertising diet programs, weight loss supplements, and fitness equipment, you have to understand that these guys were working and losing weight for some time before they made those infomercials. Celebrities may look fabulous, but they have what many of us don’t have–a personal staff of personal trainers, chefs and fitness coaches that helped them to look the way they do. You won’t get the same results because you simply do not have the same resources that they do.

The celebrity body is not just a product of the diet programs and books–it is a result of the professional team that celebrities have at their disposal because they have the money to employ these folks. And because you do not have that same professional team at your disposal your results from the celebrity diet programs or books will be different. Also, the celebrity is being paid to look that good, so they are really motivated to lose weight, stay trim, and healthy looking for their fans. This is one of the ways how they keep their high paying jobs and high-profile celebrity status.
